Self - determination theory (SDT) is a branched theory of human motivation. It is what it says it is yall.
Extrinsic Motivation
In this space, we do something to attain a consequence. For example, I might pursue a PhD to make more money (it started that way) and you might date a guy to get money. Right or wrong, dissertation or no dissertation we are all the same. We want something.
Smells like determination to me shiii
Another Acronym, CET
Lately, I've been making names out of the acronyms to remember them (e.g. Dating ROI). I blame Madea movies for making me like this... whose DNA?
CET stands for cognitive evaluation theory. You didn't come here to learn what I'm learning but THAT'S TOO DAMN BAD. It says that extrinsic (external) motives can take away from intrinsic (internal) motives. Rewards can reduce an individual from doing what they like (internal motives).
Okay, let me bring it into real life. In my last season of softball, I did not fulfill the external rewards I wanted. During the season I knew that I wasn't going to. But... people say don't say but, but it's so pivotal to telling the plot twist. But it didn't subtract from my internal motives. It probably even increased them. Looking back, sure I didn't get what I wanted. Maybe I won't make all the money that is promised at the end of Gatewood's book (7th edition). Yet, who I am in the process of fulfilling it is what gives me peace. See I might not have walked away being an All-American, but I did walk away as a woman. A woman who persevered and all the good shi.
Have visions for people & things rather than expectations.
It's safe to say that we expect people to be, do, and act a certain way. And when they don't we gonna throw the "well I wasn't raised like that" sayin. Might be true but who are we to expect something? The moment we assign expectations we sign up for disappointment. 2023, so many people have disappointed me. I felt, shoot, I knew they should'nt have been a,b, and c. We might be right but I doubt God cares about us being right. Rather, we shall assign a vision for someone. You shouldn't or should have done this or that but I see something more for you. That's peace. We might not agree with people's actions but we can agree God has a vision for me, you, and them too. The story with this person or event might not end with an extrinsic need we want. It's possible an "I forgive them" is more powerful than them saying "I was wrong". "I forgive them" is for our souls, not theirs. Like my foot says, pray then move your feet.
So what is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation?
I will keep it simple, one difference, intrinsic doesn't have a time limit. Internal motive feeds the soul and can be transferred anywhere. Even Ruston, Louisiana. And damn sure 2024.
Xoxo, SDType of chick, the woman bringing some shi w/her into 2024, and simply a 15th-week PhD student
